Mealhouse Brow
Stockport
Part of Northern Counties Housing Association’s regeneration of Stockport town centre, Mealhouse Brow has created new homes and shops while conserving the area's rich history. Designed by TADW Architects.
This carefully designed mixed use development of seven shops and twenty affordable rented flats within the Market Underbanks Conservation Area combines new build accommodation with the re-use of several repaired and refurbished buildings, which have been variously recycled over the last five hundred years.
The scheme demonstrates how a range of agencies can fund a successful project which involved extensive archaeological investigation, including the excavation of eighteenth century gaol cells and the exposure and restoration of the listed medieval town wall.
A derelict Grade II listed building, dating mainly from the eighteenth century but with parts from long before which housed the medieval Court Leet, was meticulously restored and new structures were skilfully integrated with this and with several nineteenth century facades.
The site's historical and archaeological complexity resulted in a long time scale for the scheme's realisation.
