South at Didsbury Point
Evaluation
The developer’s aim was to have the 'simple satisfaction of knowing that owners are truly at ease in their homes', and here this would appear to be the case. It is clear that the user was considered when these dwellings were designed. Simple interlocking volumes, with generous glazing, balconies and gardens, provide places that fit current ways of living. Well-detailed bathrooms (often en-suite) and kitchens, built-in wardrobes and other storage space all make for comfortable living.
The form and massing of the buildings do not quite live up to the excellent aspirations of the developer. The height of the buildings, and the use of materials, provides an inner city aesthetic. However, as a comparatively low-density development, it lacks the tight-knit feeling that is expected of the urban village. At this density, owners might well expect direct access to gardens rather than to balconies, and also to be provided with more communal open space.
With a car parking allowance of 130%, more could have been made of the parking areas, and of the road network. It is hoped that once the landscaping is complete, its quality will enhance the whole development.
