Butts Green

Design process

In 2002 English Partnerships and Warrington Borough Council prepared a demanding and detailed joint development brief for the two Kingswood sites. The requirements of the brief included high environmental standards, a specified mix and number of dwellings and two large terraces at the northern edge of the site providing backcloth buildings to muffle motorway noise. The aim was to reinterpret a mediaeval settlement, which the two large terraces should reinforce and enhance. A range of materials and details was specified in the brief as was the avoidance of integral garages in elevations fronting access roads, in favour of rear parking courts.

Bellway Homes was the only developer interested in taking on the development and bought the site in March 2003. Construction started in June 2003, using some standard plans re-elevated, but mostly new designs by the architect, John Wilson Associates. The first homes went on sale in September 2003 and the project will be completed in July 2006.
