PM hosts climate finance meeting

The Prime Minister has co-hosted a major meeting on climate change financing in Downing Street.

The High Level Advisory Group on Climate Change Financing, which was appointed by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, met for the first time on 31 March.

The meeting was attended by Guyanan President Bharrat Jagdeo, Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg and Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, as well as US President Barack Obama’s chief economic adviser Larry Summers and experts including Lord Stern.

The PM, who hosted the meeting with Prime Minister Meles, aimed to unblock negotiations on long-term finance which is seen as key to helping poor countries adapt to climate change.

They examined how $100 billion in annual finance for developing countries by 2020 can be raised, as agreed in the Copenhagen Accord in December last year.

At the end of the meeting the PM said:

“If we can solve this problem I believe we will be on our way to achieving a global agreement. And today’s first meeting of the group has made a really constructive start.

This is a positive sign that progress can be made with the right leadership. It is vital for Britain that we achieve success.”

The group is due to produce a report for the Cancun climate change conference later this year.
