IPCC Scholarship Programme

The IPCC is pleased to announce the Call for Applications for the second round of awards.
 
Applications must be submitted on-line by 30 September 2012.
 
The Scholarship awards will be made for the period 2013-14.

Objectives

The aim of the IPCC Scholarship Programme is to build capacity in the understanding and management of climate change in developing countries through providing opportunities for young scientists from developing countries to undertake studies that would not be possible without the intervention of the Fund.
 
Applications from students from Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS) researching topics with the fields of study chosen for the call for applications are given priority.


2012 Applications

Proposals should focus on one of the following fields of study:

  • Socio-economic modeling related to climate change
  • Underlying science of climate change
  • Climate change and water

Second Call for Applications for the Scholarship Programme


Eligibility Criteria

The Call for Applications is open to candidates fulfilling the following requirements:

  • Post-Graduate students at PhD level, accepted at a recognized educational institution to start studies in 2013, or currently enrolled on continuing PhD courses
  • Applicants must be younger than 30 years of age at the time of application
  • Applicants must be nationals of developing countries


Please note:
Priority will be given to students from Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS)
Equal opportunity will be given to equally qualified women


Fields of Study

Research proposals for the second Call for Applications will focus on one of the following fields of study:

  • Socio-economic modelling related to climate change
  • Underlying science of climate change
  • Climate change and water

Incomplete applications, as well as candidatures that do not fulfil the requirements will be eliminated.


Further Information

Duration of study

A Scholarship award will be accorded for a period of one year, renewable once. The award, and its possible renewal, is subject to satisfactory progress during the period of study. Term reports, signed by the research supervisor, will be expected to be submitted to the IPCC Scholarship Programme by the students. All students will be required to submit a final report.


Dates of study

Awards will be made for the academic year starting in the last trimester of 2013. Students should commence their studies as soon as possible thereafter.


Programme of study

Only candidates pursuing PhD studies within the fields of study listed above are eligible to apply.


Scholarship amount

A detailed estimate budget should be submitted on the application form.
 
A scholarship award will be for a maximum amount of USD 20,000 per year.


Evaluation of applications

Applications will be submitted to a two-level selection process. IPCC scientific experts will assess the applications in a first review. The IPCC Science Board will then review the applications and make a final selection of candidates to receive the awards.


Announcement of results

The candidates selected for an award will be notified individually during the second quarter of 2013. The results will be made public on the website, facebook page and via twitter (@IPCC_CH) at a later date.
 

  • IPCC Secretariat (Scholarship Programme) receives and screens all applications for eligibility and assigns them to appropriate experts according to the fields of study (July-October 2012)
  • IPCC Scientific Experts review the applications and proposals and make their recommendations (October - December 2012)
  • IPCC Science Board assesses the applications and the proposals and makes the final selection of the candidates to receive the awards (first trimester of 2013)

The IPCC welcomes contributions to the scholarship programme and is happy to provide further information to prospective funding partners for the second round of scholarship awards.

    The Programme received its first gift on 9 July 2009 from Dr Gro Harlem Brundtland. In her acceptance speech of the Tallberg Leadership Award, Dr Brundtland made this donation for "for supporting what the IPCC has decided to do with its Nobel Peace Prize money: to give scholarships for research on climate change in developing countries and this is obviously meant for young people." - Play External Video Watch webcast

On 9 December 2007, the IPCC was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for its 'efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change'.


The award of the Nobel Peace Prize recognized the importance of addressing the implications of climate change on stability and human security.


The IPCC Scholarship Programme was established with the funds received from the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize award to the IPCC. The first funding partner of the Programme was Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland, Former Norwegian Prime Minister and UN Special Envoy on Climate Change. Dr Brundtland made her donation from the Tallberg Leadership Award, which she received in June 2009.



Results of the first round of the IPCC Scholarship Programme Awards


 
A total of nine young students and researchers from developing countries were awarded a scholarship for postgraduate studies or research for the period 2011-2012. Seven of these students (*) were awarded a "Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation grant for IPCC" within the framework of the collaboration between the IPCC Scholarship Programme and the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation Young Researchers Scholarships Initiative.
