About us

The UK Border Agency was established as an agency of the Home Office in April 2009.  The Agency brought together the Border and Immigration Agency, some of the overseas and border operations of HM Revenue and Customs and UKvisas.

International Group

International Group is an integral part of the UK Border Agency, with 2100 staff in 131 countries throughout the world, working to help deliver the Agency’s three objectives.

  • Protecting our border and our national interests.
  • Tackling border tax fraud, smuggling and immigration crime.
  • Implementing fast and fair decisions.

In 2010, International Group issued almost 2.1 million UK visas. We refused nearly 400,000 visas because applicants did not meet (or could not show) that they met our entry criteria.

We have more than 250 visa application centres world-wide where applicants can submit their application for a UK visa (101 of these centres are run by our commercial partners). 44 per cent of our applicants apply online.
