Eligibility for a British passport

You are eligible for a British passport if you are a British citizen, a British overseas territories citizen, a British national (overseas), a British overseas citizen, a British subject or a British protected person.

If you decide to make a first time application for a British passport you will need to provide relevant supporting documentation. Please understand that if you submit a passport application and it is refused as you are either ineligible, or have not provided adequate supporting evidence, the passport fee will not be refunded. The fee you pay covers the costs of processing and assessing your application at the overseas Passport Processing Centre.

You can find information on how to apply for a British passport  on the British Embassy in Paris website. If you cannot find the answer to your question on the website please call the Careline UK passport helpline on +44 208 082 4729. Please be aware that you will be charged for this call so you may wish to try the website first.

The Careline UK Passport Helpline, British Embassies, High Commissions & Consulate staff overseas are not able to answer enquiries on whether you are eligible for a British Passport. Determining whether you are a British national and whether you qualify for a British passport is a complex process that requires diligent interpretation by highly trained nationality examiners.

If you have never held a British passport and are not sure about your eligibility or need to find out more about British citizenship, you can find further information from the UK Border Agency website  or the Identity and Passport website for a quick reference guide. Applicants must provide evidence of their entitlement to British Nationality if they are a first time applicant.  The onus is on applicants to provide evidence to support their claim.  If you submit a passport application and you are denied as you are not eligible the passport fee will not be refunded and the fee covers assessing your case and not only the passport document. You can also phone the nationality contact centre direct on +44 151 672 5626. The phone lines are open 09:00 to 17:00 Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays.
