More than a Facelift

Posted 30 October 2009 by David Miliband  |  4 comments
You might have noticed that the look of the Foreign Office website has changed. Actually, it’s more than just a facelift. There is now more focus on top global issues, with information offered in one and place in different, more engaging ways. There is also easier access to key Foreign Office services and information.

This is important because it reflects our commitment to clearly inform and genuinely engage on foreign policy, and to use the web to make a difference on important global issues.

Look out for changes in the design of this blog soon…

Diplomatic Blogging

Posted 13 May 2009 by David Miliband  |  1 comments

The New America Foundation hosted a webcast for new and old media in Washington. The brickbats between new bloggers and "old" media (George Stephanopoulos of ABC) were a bit tougher than the foreign policy debate. But the depth and range of think tank expertise and commentary on foreign policy was remarkable.

The new media brings speed and dialogue. It does not replace traditional diplomacy. But we are only in the foothills of exploring its power.

Concert Diplomacy aka Coalition Builders

Posted 24 April 2009 by David Miliband  |  2 comments

My argument at the 2009 Easter Banquet held in the city for the London diplomatic corps was that the combination of economic recession and new American administration created a unique double push to multilateralism. Britain's role is to be an activist coalition builder, using our values of social justice and responsibility to leverage international engagement.

I should have read Henry Kissinger's piece in the Washington Post  the same day. He sets out how concert diplomacy can work. "Common action grows out of shared convictions" he writes. He compares the approach to the situation after the Napoleonic Wars - nations working together to enforce international norms.

This is not the realism or idealism debate all over again. It is the response to interdependence.
