Mili - banned

I am now in Oslo for the signing ceremony by over 100 countries of the first convention on cluster munitions. As the campaign badges demanded, the convention is comprehensive and workable . But as my speech at the ceremony highlighted, we have a big job of implementation and advocacy to undertake. Some of the most surprising countries see cluster bombs as part of their national defence.....

Congratulations to all of the UK team that worked on this - and thanks also for the strong commitment to bringing more states into the treaty. The UK is a key partner in a ground-breaking humanitarian success.

I was watching a short video on the BBC News website which showed a clip of cluster bombs being used. I'm grateful that the government are signatories to this treaty. I hope that the big three USA, Russia, China will search their concience and also sign this treaty soon.

I felt proud to watch the UK sign this Treaty. As you say its a big job to now implement, but its good to see the UK is already acting on its Treaty obligations, and has begun destroying its stockpiles of cluster bombs.

Shame that the definition of cluster bomb / multiple munitions excludes the next generation of weapons that we are buying from the Americans...

Dear David, Congratulations for leading the British delegation to the Convention on Cluster Munitions in Oslo! It was moving to see you taking the lead and showing the road ahead! As you rightly said, 'we have a big job for implementing and advocating' for! We expect you to lead the world and bring on board the Americans and Russians! Yes, I was there when we banned Cluster Munitions! Keep it up Dave, Manuel de Araujo, Mozambique

It is about time that they were removed, they have been around too long.
