UK Oil and Gas Industry Safety Awards Winners Announced
| Date: | 21 Apr 2010 | | Details: | UK Oil and Gas Industry Safety Awards Winners Announced Oil & Gas UK and Step Change in Safety today (21 April 2010) announced the winners of the first UK Oil and Gas Industry Safety Awards, sponsored by Maersk Oil. The awards honour and celebrate exemplary behaviour by individuals and companies in creating a safety culture that is based on the concept of personal responsibility, pro-active behaviour and communication.
Malcolm Webb, chief executive of Oil & Gas UK, said: "Safety is a job never done and we constantly need to strive to improve and reduce the risk to those working in our industry to the absolute minimum. To achieve this, it is vital that we learn from each other, share best practice and take new ideas and initiatives back into our own individual companies. This is why the UK Oil and Gas Industry Safety Awards were created; to honour our high performers and, most importantly, to provide a platform to share their achievements and best practice with the wider industry."
The winners in the five categories are:
Individual awards:
Kevin Hailes, North Sea electrical technical authority, BP, won the Award for Safety Leadership, sponsored by Chevron Upstream Europe, which recognises a highly motivated individual who works tirelessly to ensure their team works in a safe and professional manner at all times.
Stuart Mann, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) technician, Integrated Engineering Services Ltd, scooped the Award for Safety Representative of the Year, sponsored by Nexen Petroleum UK Limited, which recognises an individual's active participation and effectiveness in regards to the promotion of and commitment to the safety agenda within the oil and gas industry.
John Roper, scaffolder / safety technician, RBG Ltd, won the Award for Preventative Safety Action, sponsored by Nexen Petroleum UK Limited, which recognises an individual who, through their pro-active and vigilant behaviour, successfully intervened to prevent a potential incident.
Victoria Lee, trainee health, safety, environment and quality (HSEQ) advisor, BIS Salamis, is the winner of the Safety Award for Most Promising Individual, sponsored by Draeger Safety UK Limited, which recognises the enthusiasm of an individual who has demonstrated a keen interest in safety matters and actively embraces the safety culture in the oil and gas industry.
Company award:
BP (Schiehallion FPSO) won the Award for Innovation in Safety, sponsored by ABB Engineering Services, which recognises a company's innovative approach to safety through the implementation of a new process or technique.
A sixth award, the Award for Services to Safety was presented to Bob Kyle, safety consultant with Oil & Gas UK, who was personally chosen for this award by the co-chairs of Step Change in Safety; John Forrest, vice president and country manager of Talisman Energy (UK) Limited and Gordon Ballard, chairman of Schlumberger Oilfield UK plc.
Commenting on the first UK Oil and Gas Industry Safety Awards, Gordon Ballard said: "There are so many good safety ideas and initiatives out there, so many success stories, it was time that we shared them on an industry wide level and honoured those who lead the way on safety, demonstrating that excellent safety behaviour on all levels is being recognised."
Judith Hackitt CBE, chair of the Health and Safety Executive, gave the first annual UK Oil and Gas Industry safety lecture. In her lecture, she focussed on the importance of leadership and creating the right safety culture offshore: "Celebrating and recognising achievement inspires and motivates others to follow good practice and learn from one another. The type of leadership we want to encourage offshore requires a culture where workers feel that they can legitimately express their concerns, and that their suggestions will be listened to, welcomed and acted upon. When they are involved in this way, a culture change happens and good practice and learning can be shared with others.
"The most important asset in any business is its people. People can have good ideas, can show leadership and can inspire others to take the initiative and do similar things. I know there has to be a winner, but 90 nominations were received, that's a lot of people using their ingenuity to create solutions or find ways to maker their workplace safer for everyone."
