Ofsted’s latest survey highlights the challenges local authorities face in identifying and tracking children who are missing from education. Children missing from education, and whose whereabouts become unknown, not only risk failing academically but are also potentially vulnerable to physical, emotional and psychological harm.

Young people in secure accommodation losing out on chances of rehabilitation
Some children and young people in secure care are being placed as far away as 200 miles from their families, damaging their chances of receiving coordinated support, according to a report published today by Ofsted, the Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills.

The majority of social workers say they are receiving good training and line management support
Ofsted’s first national annual survey of social workers’ views, Safeguarding and looked after children, with responses from over 4,000 practitioners, is published today. The survey is issued alongside a report on the views of over 1,500 third sector organisations who provide services for children and young people across most local authorities in England.
These surveys provide a window on the views and experience of front line staff as they work to safeguard and protect children.

Targeted support from local authorities and their partners is helping to meet the needs of vulnerable young people, according to a report published today by Ofsted, the Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills. However, the report finds that local authorities have made limited progress in involving voluntary, community and private groups in providing youth services, and that the focus on providing services for ‘at risk’ young people risked undermining the youth activities available to all young people.

Latest inspection outcome figures released
Ofsted today released official data showing outcomes for the first two terms of the new school inspection framework which was introduced in September last year. The new inspection regime reflects Ofsted’s continued drive to focus inspection where it is most needed, with earlier inspection and greater attention on weaker schools, and less frequent inspection of the best.
