The bill aims to introduce a new system for scrutiny of medical certificates pertaining to cause of death. It aims to do this by introducing several new measures, such as the creation of medical reviewer and senior medical reviewer posts to review death certificates for accuracy.

If successful, the bill will also ensure that it will be an offence to dispose of a body, or body parts, without authorisation; and, where a person has died out-with Scotland, medical reviewers will be given more control on how that body is handled upon return to this country.

Committee concerns over 2014 Games
high jumperTicket sales projections for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games may be too ambitious and may need to be reviewed, according to a report published by the Public Audit Committee.

In the Progress on Planning for the Delivery of the Commonwealth Games 2014 report, the committee advises that the Organising Committee should ensure robust monitoring and risk management procedures are maintained, to guarantee that the Games are delivered on time and on budget.

The committee’s report also highlights issues surrounding the way in which the budget has been managed to date, and is concerned that potential inflationary increases had not been built into forecasts until May 2010.

Hospital corridor with gurneys and bed trolleys. photo: Gary Martin / iStock imageA report published by the Public Audit Committee has endorsed pay freezes for NHS senior staff and a reduction in management posts, in order to achieve necessary savings.

The Overview of the NHS in Scotland’s performance 2008/09 warns that these and other measures, are required in light of the financial challenges currently facing the NHS.

The committe also highlighted that NHS Boards can only continue to develop new services and fund the capital improvements already agreed, if they reinvest efficiency savings and identify further sources of savings.

Committee convener Hugh Henry MSP added:
"the committee wants to know how the Scottish Government will monitor the impact of projected NHS workplace reductions on quality of care, and ensure that they do not have a detrimental impact on the delivery of front line services.”
