Getting Started with the TRE

About the TRE

The Teacher Resource Exchange is designed to help teachers develop and share ideas for activities and resources.

Contributions will be many and varied from simple ideas and questions, to complete contributions/lesson plans or schemes of work, which will enable other teachers to use these resources within their own lessons.

Why Register?

Registering with the TRE is not compulsory. You can browse and download resources without registering. You will, however, need to register if you would like to submit new resources and add comments or materials to existing resources.

Registration also provides you with a personal profile based on the specific interests selected. For example, an English teacher logging on to the TRE will see a home page drawing attention to all new English resources on the site. It is possible to amend the registration profile at any time. Your personal homepage also provides easy access to any resources submitted by you.

How to Register

To register with the TRE, click on the 'New? Register here' link in the login box on the left hand side of the site. The registration process should only take a minute or two.

You will be asked to supply a username and password for use on the site, along with personal details such as your name and email address. You will also be asked to specify your teaching role, subject and other details that enable us to personalise your TRE experience. After you have completed the form, press the submit button at the bottom of the page to complete the registration process. You will be taken to your personal homepage.

Logging in

Every page has a login box on the left hand side. To login, enter your username and password and then press the login button.

Personal Homepage - Customising the TRE to suit you

Once you have successfully logged in, the login box on the left hand side changes to contain your personal options. Keep an eye on these, they will always show your choices for the particular page you are on.

The personal box will always contain links to:

  • your personal homepage
  • edit your profile
  • logout
  • Add a new resource

Submitting Resources

To submit a new resource, you must be logged in to the TRE. Once you are logged in, a link in the personal options box will take you to the 'add a new resource' page.

The process takes place over two stages. During the first stage you will be asked to enter details such as the resource title, description and objective. Stage two involves assigning various categories to the resource such as subject, type of resource and tier (First Thought or Developing Idea) - a process called tagging. The tagging stage is important as it determines how your resource will appear in searches and on personal homepages.

Once the two stages have been completed and submitted, you will be taken to the Resource Administration page. From here you are able to edit or delete the resource, as well as attach any files or links that may be relevant.

Editing Resources

You must be logged in to edit a resource and can only edit those that you have submitted yourself.

To find your resources visit your personal home page. On the right hand side, there is a box titled 'My Resources'. This shows how many resources you have created and also keeps a count of how many you have downloaded. If you click on the first link (how many resources you have created), you will be shown a list of the resources submitted by you.

To edit, view the resource you wish to amend. One of the links in the personal options box (left hand side) will be 'Edit this Resource'. When you click on this link you are taken to the Resource Administration page. From here you can edit, delete the resource as well as add materials or links to the resource.

Submitting Comments

Submitting a comment is similar to submitting a resource. First, ensure you are logged in to the TRE. Then, find the resource you want to comment on, and view it. A link named 'add comment' will then appear in your personal options box. Following this link will provide you with a single page for adding a comment, including the comment text and any relevant categories that you wish to assign to it.

Once you have submitted your comment, you will be taken to the 'Comment Administration' page. From here you are able to edit or delete the comment, as well as attach any files or links that may be relevant.

Editing Comments

You must be logged in to edit a comment, and can only edit those that you have submitted yourself.

Once logged in, find the comment you wish to edit. An 'edit' link will appear next to the comment. Following this link will take you to the 'Comment Administration' page, where you have access to all the usual functions, including adding/deleteing the comment, uploading files, and adding/removing links.

Bookmarking Resources

The TRE bookmarking facility allows you to keep an eye on your favourite resources.

If, during browsing, you find a resource that interests you or that you think might be useful in the future, bookmark it by clicking on the 'Bookmark' link in the personal options link on the left hand side of the page. Your bookmarked resources are displayed on your personal homepage.

Using the TRE Search facility

There are several different ways to locate resources in the Teacher Resource Exchange:

  • TRE Viewer - The TRE Viewer means there is no longer the need to browse through confusing links: simply select a combination of preferred keystage, subject, type of resource and tier, and have all relevant resources delivered straight to you.
  • Free Text - If you know exactly what you want (for example a specific resource or piece of information), enter the description into the search field and click 'go'. The TRE search will return relevant results based on the words you entered, plus all similar terms contained in the TRE database. Results will be categorised according to relevance.
  • Advanced Search - If you know roughly what you want (for example a resource for a particular programme of study), you can use the Advanced Search. Select the criteria relevant to your field or area of interest from the drop-down boxes, click 'go' and the TRE search will retrieve all content and resources relevant to that area or profile.
  • Browse Resources - If you would like to browse resources with specific classifications (e.g. Keystage 1 or English) use the browse facility. This allows you to search by Keystage, Subject, Type of Resource, Timescale, Tier, Date, Author or Title.

Filter Search Results

It is possible to filter or narrow down the results of any TRE search by using the filter options on the left hand side of a search results page. You can either filter by a specific field - narrow down, or filter according to your personal profile - most relevant to me.
