Child welfare Safety

Question

Hi, I have been looking for information about safeguarding in school - the issues and the actions taken to improve safeguarding. I have searched the university journal service and cannot seem to find any journals addressing the key issues in school and how different stakeholders in education are affected. I have also searched on google scholar and the TTRB website but cannot find much. Thank you for your help.

Response

I'm not quite sure about the exact focus of your research?  There are a number of safety and safeguarding issues in education such as Internet safety, safety outdoors, bullying, abuse...
Are you focusing on vulnerable children or all children?

Also, by stakeholders are you thinking about pupils, parents, teachers, head teachers, other school staff, local area authorities, children's services...?

If you think more about your focus this will help you find resources.  We have had questions about safety in schools and I include some examples below.  Searching the TTRB with keyword safeguarding gives 28 results, have you looked at these?  These include government reports, Lord Laming's report, and Teachers TV videos on this topic.

The Children's Commissioner website is also worth a look - see link below.
Searching the IOE library catalogue with safeguarding gives nearly 100 results including DCSF, Ofsted and Children's Commissioner reports available online.  The first reference below may be useful as it focuses on the perceptions of senior stakeholders.  These references are only a sample so you may want to link to the catalogue, replicate the search and see what else is available that is particularly relevant?
You will also find articles by searching the BEI with the same term and I have included references to those that look particularly relevant in terms of stakeholders such as pupils, employers, welfare services, etc.

I hope this helps.

"This briefing considers the quality assurance aspects of safeguarding services. It focuses on what is known about how people make decisions in child protection work and, in particular, on how they respond to new and challenging information under pressure, in ongoing chronic situations when children may be at significant risk of harm. It draws on research as well as on knowledge of practice. While it has drawn heavily on social work practice and research, the messages are applicable to all professionals and agencies."
