If we understand what stops some people playing sport we can
start to do something about it.
Our understanding participation research programme identifies
the barriers, behaviours and atttitudes we need to tackle if we are
to switch more people onto sport, particularly from hard-to reach
groups such as lone parents, the recently retired and young
women.

group participation.

Knowing what works is useless if you don't understand why.
We have developed a three stage approach to project evaluation
that can be used by anyone planning a sports project, programme or
initiative.

People will only keep playing sport if they enjoy it.
So we have developed an innovative satisfaction survey
which helps us measure satisfaction levels within individual
sports.
We have used this information to set satisfaction targets for
sport we fund and will monitor each governing body's progress -
providing help and support to get levels higher when we need
to.

What is sport's impact on the economy? Sport England's Economic
Value of Sport report, published in August 2010 assesses the
economic value of sport across England as a whole and separately
for each region.

If Sport England is to succeed in building a
world-leading community sport system we need evidence, insight and
understanding.
We need to track our progress against our
grow, sustain and excel targets. We want to find out why people
play sport, what keeps them engaged and why they drop out. And we
want to understand what does and doesn’t work in getting people
playing more and better sport so we can invest our time, money and
expertise wisely.
Our Active People
Survey measures how many people participate, who they are, what
sports they do, and how this varies across England. The latest
release revealed that 6.82 million people now play sport at least
three times a week.
Our ‘satisfaction with
the quality of the sporting experience’ survey (
SQSE
),
provides measurement and insight into the reason why people take
part in sport and what impacts on their level of satisfaction.
These things matter – as the better the quality of experience the
more likely they are to keep playing. Results from the first
satisfaction survey, published in June 2009, show that overall
satisfaction levels are high. The second year of the survey, SQSE2,
will take place between March and May 2010, with headline results
published in June 2010.
