Emily has to deal with a racist incident
Jane: It’s my turn Meena.
Meena: No it’s not, you’ve had your turn.
Jane: I’m not sitting here again. My mum says I shouldn’t anyway.
Emily: Why’s that Jane?
Jane: Cos she says I shouldn’t be friends with Pakis.
Meena: I’m not a Paki miss, tell her.
Pupil 3: No she’s not Jane, she’s Indian, aren’t you Meena?
Jane: Same difference, my Mum says you’re a Paki, and she doesn’t want them moving in round here.
Emily: Jane, stop. I know you’re saying things your Mum says, but what you’re calling Meena is a rude and insulting word. You’re not allowed to use it in school and I’m very, very sad that you have. I want you to say sorry to Meena.
Jane: But it was my turn Miss, it was.
Emily: That’s not why you have to say sorry. You used a very unkind word and I want you to apologise to Meena and to the rest of the table for saying a rude and unkind word.
Jane: But Miss why is it rude? She is a Pa.....
Emily: Jane, don’t make it worse.
Jane: But I’m only saying what my Mum says.
Emily: I know Jane, and we need to talk about that. But if you won’t say sorry you’re going to have to go now and talk to the Head about it. I’m not having people calling others by nasty names.
Jane: Sorry Meena.
