My backgroundI was recruited direct from college in South Africa to help fill the UK’s teacher shortage. I have strong feelings about Britain ‘stealing’ people like me from a country where we’re needed, but you’re only borrowing me. I’ll go back one day.
One comment about ‘race’ and diversityI can’t help being highly conscious of being a role model to black kids (though there are hardly any in my school). I also think it’s good for whites to see me in a position of authority. My own schooling was affected by Apartheid, something I’ll never forget.
Why I’m in teachingI want to make a positive contribution, I like to see the light go on in kids’ eyes, I like bossing people about.
One complaintNot enough opportunity to boss people about.
