Definition and commentaryThe term ‘marketisation’ is used in education to refer to the way in which schools have been placed in competition with each other in the belief that this will drive up educational standards for all. Middle class parents have been shown to be particularly successful in using these systems to access successful and popular schools (see link to Sutton Trust report below). Harris and Ranson (2005), provide a critique of both marketisation and personalisation, arguing that ‘disadvantaged’ pupils will be those least likely to benefit from these initiatives (see full reference below).
