What the resource is.
This programme follows two NQTs embarking upon their first term of work at Oldknow, one of the largest junior schools in the country.
Simrit Riat and Vicky Rutherford met as trainee teachers and now begin their teaching careers as colleagues and friends teaching Year 3 at the school.Headteacher Bhupinder Kondal talks about the challenges that lie ahead for Simrit and Vicky, and reveals her hopes and expectations for their first term as new teachers. Teaching consultant Sue Cowley takes a close look at Simrit at work in her Year 3 classroom, and discusses with both NQTs some strategies for classroom organisation and behaviour management. Oldknow is a challenging inner-city school recently taken out of special measures. Most of the pupils are from a Pakistani or Bangladeshi background and almost all speak EAL.
The aims of the resource
The resource aims to explore the issues that arise for NQT's in establishing classroom organisation and practice in the first six weeks of the their first term of teaching.
Key findings or focus
The programme focuses on the establishment of rules and routines and on one science lesson led by one of the NQT's. The major challenge with this year 3 class is differentiation for diversity. The NQT herself has planned several strategies for differentiation, and these are expanded in the review of the lesson with the educational consultant.
Implications for behaviour for learning
This resource emphasises the importance of establishing behaviours for learning in the early stages of teaching. Setting up clear classroom routines and organisation is prioritised in this process, and the importance of effective differentiation for successful learning explored. Links are made between successful learning and the establishment of a harmonious classroom environment and positive behaviour

The resource builds on some good practice on the part of the NQT's who take part. There are also well thought through examples of in meeting diverse needs in the primary classroom through the science curriculum.
The implications for ITE tutors/mentors - when and how it could have best impact.
This resource would be most useful for trainees who are starting their practice in school. It provides clear guidelines about establishing a positive environment for learning behaviour from the very start and offers some good examples of how they might do this. It also provides some useful snippets for dealing with ethnic and linguistic diversity.
The relevance to ITE students. - how and why it has importance.
Failure to establish clear grounds rules and organisation from the start can lead many trainees into difficulties later on. This resource shows how behaviours for successful learning can be fostered through teacher behaviour such as voice tone control, the strategic use of positives and pauses. Classroom strategies which address concentration span and the use of exploratory talk also assist in differentiating and fostering supportive networks. Trainees would be able to easily identify with the situation this NQT finds herself in.
