How to search the TTRB
Start your search by using a variety of keywords whenever you use databases, websites or search engines. If necessary use a thesaurus or dictionary to define existing keywords and find out new ones. For example, searching for the term ‘reading' may give you some good results but using an alternative such as ‘literacy' may give you a better range of resources.
The TTRB website has a Glossary section which will help you with educational terminology. This can be very useful when you are beginning your research.
Simple Search - type keyword(s) and select either ‘All words', ‘Any words' or ‘Exact phrase'. Then click 'Search'.
Example of a simple search for resources about learning styles:
- Type learning styles.
- Select 'Exact phrase' button.
- Click on 'Search.'
- You can refine your search results by selecting from the options on the left - for example by choosing "14-19" from the Key Stage drop down menu.
- Click on the ‘Refine results' box to narrow down your search results
Advanced Search - this allows you to focus your search and be more specific in your search criteria. This search can also include adding a British Education Index term, selecting a curriculum subject, specifying key stage and so on.
Example of an advanced search for resources relating to gender differences and attainment in mathematics:
- Type gender boys girls.
- Click ‘Any Words' button for results that mention any of those keywords.
- Choose mathematics as your curriculum area.
- Click 'Search' to search the whole resource not restricted by publishing date.
