A comparison of the effectiveness of level 3 provision in 25 post-16 providers
This small-scale survey investigated the effectiveness of level 3 provision in school sixth forms, general further education colleges and sixth form colleges. Inspectors visited 25 institutions which provided level 3 qualifications for students aged 16 to 19. The survey found the overall quality of provision and outcomes was good or outstanding in nearly three quarters of the providers visited. Against this background of generally strong level 3 provision in all types of provider, the most effective group of providers among the sample visited was sixth form colleges. The report compares different aspects of provision and identifies the factors which led to good or outstanding achievement.

A 2006 report based on the views of over 200 adopted children. The children reveal how to make the adoption process better; what they liked and did not like about adoption; and what they need to feel more supported.

About education
This 2007 report looks at the views of 77 children and young people about their education, with 75% of them rating their education as eight or more out of ten. The report shows that nearly three-quarters of children have changed schools since they first came into care, with over half finding their new school better because of new friends and teachers.

A report on how well CAFCASS and HMCS have responded to the implementation of the adoption aspects of the Adoption and Children Act 2002. This Act came into place on 30 December 2005 and represents the largest reform in adoption for more than 30 years.

Adoption: messages from inspections of adoption agencies
A 2006 report into the performance of adoption agencies, based on the evidence found in CSCI inspections. The report reveals that there is better support for children and their adoptive families; that there are problems in recruiting skilled and experienced staff; and that there is concern about the use of agency workers that can effect the quality of service for children in adoption.

An evaluation of National Strategy intervention programmes
This small-scale survey evaluated the impact of National Strategy approaches to intervention on pupils working just below national expectations in a small sample of 12 primary and nine secondary schools. Intervention was more effective in the primary schools than in the secondary schools visited and stemmed from careful analysis of pupils’ weaknesses, flexible planning of programmes, thorough training of key staff and effective monitoring and evaluation. Good leadership and management contributed to the successful impact.

An evaluation of the provision of mental health services for looked after young people over the age of 16 accommodated in residential settings
This report draws on visits to 27 children’s homes in eight local authorities. It identifies how the mental health needs of young people in care aged 16 and over are met. It illustrates the use of mental health resources in the children’s homes visited, as well as good practice and the problems found, and considers how well staff respond to the needs of young people in their care. The report emphasises the importance of different agencies working together to improve and develop services for young people.
