Provision for gifted and talented pupils in physical education 2003-04

The Physical Education, School Sport and Club Links (PESSCL) programme was launched in October 2002. The PESSCL programme is being delivered through eight programmes. The gifted and talented programme is dedicated to improving the range and quality of teaching, coaching and learning for pupils talented in sports

Reaching the Key Stage 2 standard in swimming

This survey was designed to assess the impact of recent government initiatives to improve the standards and provision of swimming at Key Stage 2. Her Majesty's Inspectors (HMI) and Additional Inspectors visited 30 primary schools in 17 school sport partnerships to evaluate the quality and effectiveness of provision in primary schools, with a particular focus on the impact of the then Department for Education and Skills' national top-up swimming programme for pupils who have difficulty reaching the Key Stage 2 standard of swimming 25 metres unaided.

School sport partnerships

Ofsted has evaluated the government's Physical Education, School Sport and Club Links (PESSCL) strategy since 2003. In 2005/06, HMI visited 15 primary schools and 12 secondary schools in 16 school sport partnerships. This small-scale survey was designed to identify good practice and to help partnerships, schools and clubs to analyse their provision.

The School Sports Partnerships Programme (originally called the School Sport Co-ordinator Programme) was launched in September 2000. The overall objective is to increase the percentage of 5-16-year-old schoolchildren in England who spend a minimum of two hours each week on high-quality PE and school sport within and beyond the curriculum to 75% by 2006.
