Initial teacher training for teachers of citizenship 2003/04: overview report

In recognition of the developing nature of citizenship as a new curriculum subject, Ofsted agreed with the TTA that inspection arrangements for 2003/04 would be modified to take account of the potential difficulties faced by providers in finding sufficient suitable school placements. Five PGCE courses were inspected under these arrangements. This overview report draws on evidence from these inspections.

This guidance is a revised edition of a booklet originally published in 2001 as part of a training course in the inspection of pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. In September 2003, Ofsted made a version of this training course available to schools.

Provision for gifted and talented pupils in physical education 2003-04

The Physical Education, School Sport and Club Links (PESSCL) programme was launched in October 2002. The PESSCL programme is being delivered through eight programmes. The gifted and talented programme is dedicated to improving the range and quality of teaching, coaching and learning for pupils talented in sports

Provision of music services in 15 local education authorities

The Standards Fund for Music was introduced so that local education authority (LEA) music services could bid for grants. Ofsted inspected LEA provision and this was followed by a survey - see Local education authority music services. Between November 2003 and April 2004, a further 15 inspections were conducted and are reported on in Provision of music services.

Reading for purpose and pleasure

This survey was undertaken to identify reasons for the wide range in attainment in reading among primary-aged pupils; to disseminate schools' effective practice in reducing underachievement and developing pupils' positive attitudes to reading; and to describe key features of the successful teaching of reading.
