This report evaluates the progress which has been made in developing a coherent phase of education and training for young people between the ages of 14 and 19. It considers the impact of local strategies. The report highlights the need for more concerted action to ensure that there are progression routes for all young people and better availability of impartial advice and guidance.

Developing enterprising young people

This report evaluates enterprise learning in schools at Key Stage 4, drawing on the research of two surveys performed in 2003/04 and 2004/05. The surveys covered a range of schools providing Key Stage 4 enterprise education. The report highlights that although there has been some progress, many shortcomings identified in the earlier survey are still present in the latest.

Developing financially capable young people

This report draws on a small survey of secondary schools and colleges carried out during 2006/07 to identify features of good practice in personal finance education. It examines the case for personal finance education being part of the curriculum for all 11-18-year-olds and considers current weaknesses in provision and the barriers to future development. It makes a number of recommendations to improve personal finance education.

Developing new vocational pathways: final report on the introduction of new GCSEs

In September 2002, eight new General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) courses in vocational subjects were introduced: applied art and design; applied business; engineering; health and social care; ICT; leisure and tourism; manufacturing; and applied science. This report covers the introduction of these courses in schools from September 2002 to April 2004.

Developing social, emotional and behavioural skills in secondary schools

The Secondary National Strategy's pilot programme, Developing social, emotional and behavioural skills, was introduced to 54 schools in five local authorities in the summer term of 2005 and to a sixth authority one term later. Ofsted evaluated the pilot programme over five terms in 11 schools. The schools were selected to represent a range of types of school. After five terms, the greatest impact in the schools was on teachers' attitudes towards the idea of social, emotional and behavioural skills and their understanding of how to develop these skills systematically within subject lessons. Where the pilot was most effective, teachers adjusted teaching methods to take account of the pupils' specific needs. As a result, pupils worked better in teams, were better able to recognise and articulate their feelings, and showed greater respect for each other's differences and strengths.

This report evaluates the strengths and weaknesses in business education for 14–19-year-olds in schools and colleges, and in the provision of initial training of teachers to teach business education in schools. It explores current issues in business education, including the development of economic and business understanding and financial capability for all students at Key Stage 4.
