White Working Class Male Underachievement in Primary Schools - The Guardian 19 November 2009

National assessment statistics for pupils aged 11 published (19/11/09) revealed that White working class male achievement in primary schools is now a major cause for concern. Less than 50% of White boys on free school meals (FSM) attained level 4 compared to 51.6% of Black boys on FSM.

The statistical analysis presented by the Education Guardian indicates that of all pupils children of Irish Traveller and Gypsy/Roma origin have the lowest attainment. The figures reinforce the contention that the gap between rich and poor is widening, and highlight the continued need for greater understanding of the factors that contribute to low attainment and the ways in which different ethnic groups are affected.
