Promoting positive behaviour (individual)

The Behaviour 4 Learning materials are intended to support the work of tutors and school mentors with trainee teachers in Primary ITT courses. This resource consists of a number of videos from a filmed case study at Lynncroft Primary School.

Lynncroft Primary School

Lynncroft Primary School is in West Nottinghamshire, and has a mixed social catchment. It is a co-educational County school for children aged 5-11, with a Nursery for children aged 3-4 and a designated Parents and Toddlers' Room. The ethos and values of the school are best summarised in an extract from its school handbook: "At Lynncroft we aim to create a community for learning, in which every child is valued and respected, encouraged to do their best, and helped to have a fulfilled and successful time."

Managing inappropriate behaviours
Staff highlight the importance of:

  • understanding causes
  • examining our own feelings
  • solution-based approaches that promote positive behaviour

Meeting specific behavioural needs
The important point that individual pupils need individual strategies.

Learning from others
The teaching staff at Lynncroft Primary learn much from listening, observing, and discussing strategies, and sharing each other's expertise.

Their experiences highlight the need to recognise Continuing Professional Development opportunities in Behaviour and Attendance.
