New Audit Committee Chair at Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman

The Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman, Ann Abraham, has appointed Sir Jon Shortridge as Chair of her Audit Committee.  Sir Jon takes up his post from 1 April 2010.

Sir Jon is Chair of Community Service Volunteers, a non-executive Director of the UK Statistics Authority and Chair of the Audit Panel of Cardiff County Council.  Most recently, he was interim Permanent Secretary at the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills where he led the merger with the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform.  Prior to this he was Permanent Secretary in Wales between 1999 and 2008.

The Ombudsman’s appointment, which was made following an open recruitment process, is for a three year renewable term.  Sir Jon takes over as Chair of the Audit Committee from Andrew Puddephatt OBE, who has completed two terms.

 

Notes for Editors

  1. The role of the Audit Committee of the Office of the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman (PHSO) is to support the Ombudsman (as Accounting Officer) and the PHSO Advisory Board in monitoring the adequacy of the Office's corporate governance and control systems.
  2. Ann Abraham holds the post of UK Parliamentary Ombudsman and is also Health Service Ombudsman for England. She is appointed by the Crown and is completely independent of Government and the NHS. Her role is to provide a service to the public by undertaking independent investigations into complaints that government departments, a range of other public bodies in the UK, and the NHS in England, have not acted properly or fairly or have provided a poor service.
  3. There is no charge for using the Ombudsman’s services.
