The Queen turned 80 on 21 April 2006 and celebrated her official birthday on 17 June 2006.

A number of events took place to celebrate the birthday, both around Her Majesty's actual birthday on 21 April and her official birthday on 17 June.

The programme of events was as follows:

25 June 2006 - Children's Party at the Palace
The Queen invited 2,000 children to Buckingham Palace to celebrate the magic of books.

17 June 2006 - Trooping the Colour
A spectacular flypast and a 'feu de joie' (fire of joy) were added to the traditional celebrations in honour of The Queen's 80th birthday.

15 June 2006 - Service of Thanksgiving and Mansion House lunch
Her Majesty attended a service at St Paul's Cathedral before sampling a 'Great British Menu' at Mansion House.

18 May 2006 - 'Service over sixty' reception
Her Majesty hosted guests over the age of sixty who have made a significant contribution to national life.

3 May 2006 - Help the Aged Living Legends Awards
The Queen attended the awards at Windsor Castle as part of her 80th birthday celebrations.

23 April 2006 - Service of Thanksgiving
A special service at St George's Chapel in Windsor celebrated the life of Her Majesty.

21 April 2006 - Birthday dinner and fireworks at Kew Palace
Members of the Royal Family gathered for a private dinner on The Queen's actual birthday.

21 April 2006 - Birthday walkabout in Windsor
Her Majesty accepts gifts and flowers from the crowds in Windsor town centre on the day of her actual birthday.

The Queen opens her birthday post - 21 April 2006
Her Majesty received almost 40,000 birthday messages from members of the public.

20 April 2006 - The Queen visits the BBC
Her Majesty helped celebrate the 80th anniversary of the granting of the organisation's Royal charter.

19 April 2006 - 80th birthday reception and lunch
Her Majesty invites guests celebrating their 80th birthdays on the same day as her to Buckingham Palace.
