Clothworkers' Research Fellowship

The Collection Care Department of The National Archives is pleased to announce a new twelve month Clothworkers’ Research Fellowship generously funded by The Clothworkers’ Foundation. This is the first in a planned series of Fellowships aimed at mid-career conservation professionals who will examine some of the challenges faced by The National Archives in opening up its collections to the widest possible audience.

The National Archives is keen to offer opportunities to undertake sustained research to the conservation community, to bring new skills and experience into the organisation and explore key issues facing the heritage sector. It has therefore been decided to establish a Fellowship programme on an international and interdisciplinary basis. Each Fellowship will be tenable for a year and will be externally funded.

Like other institutions, The National Archives has to balance competing demands. It is required to act as a responsible steward of its vast holdings while making them accessible to those who wish to use them. Advances in technology – allied to the expectation that you can now find anything online – make digitisation an attractive option. However, before embarking on a programme of digitisation, a number of critical questions need to be considered, to ensure both that the process of digitising unique and fragile material is safely carried out, and that the end-product meets the demands of future users.
