Check your symptoms

  • Abdominal pain

    Pain that you feel anywhere between the chest and groin, in the area usually described as the stomach region (tummy or belly).

  • Aches and pains

    Aches and pains can affect any part of your body. Pain can vary from mild to severe and may be caused by injury, infection or illness.

  • Allergies

    Allergies occur when the immune system reacts to substances found in the environment, such as dust, pollen, certain foods and insect venom.

  • Appetite loss

    When you lose your desire to eat. Appetite loss is usually a temporary occurrence and can be caused by factors such as illness and stress.

  • Asthma

    A condition affecting your breathing, caused by the airways of your lungs becoming inflamed and swollen.

  • Backache

    Advice about discomfort or pain affecting your upper and/or lower back.

  • Bloated stomach

    Your abdomen (belly) feels painfully tight and full, even when you have not just eaten.

  • Blocked nose

    When you are unable to breathe through your nostrils easily, usually as a result of a cold, flu, hay fever or sinusitis.

  • Blood in phlegm

    Traces of blood appearing in phlegm (a sticky mucus fluid produced in the air passages of your lungs) can be a symptom of a chest infection.

  • Blow to head

    Advice for if you or someone you are looking after receives a knock, bump or blow to the head.

  • Bowel motions - irregular

    When you are unable to to empty your bowels (go to the toilet) regularly, for example because you are constipated.

  • Breast changes

    Breast changes (any differences in the look, feel or appearance of your breasts or nipples), can affect both women and men.

  • Burns

    Burns and scalds to the face and body may be caused by heat, exposure to flames, boiling liquid or chemicals.

  • Chest pain

    Chest pain can be either acute (sudden), or chronic (long-lasting), it can vary from a dull ache to a crushing sensation or a stabbing pain.

  • Cold and flu

    Cold and flu symptoms can include blocked nose, sore throat, aches and pains, fever and chills.

  • Contraception

    Information about emergency contraception, unprotected sex, sexually transmitted infections, problems with your contraceptive or condoms and more.

  • Coughing

    Coughing is a common symptom affecting all age groups. It can be a result of a cold, chest infection, allergy or choking.

  • Deafness

    Your hearing is reduced out of one or both ears, for example as a result of a blow to the head, an injury to the ear, or a cold.

  • Dental problems

    Help and advice for dental problems affecting the teeth and gums, for example infections, broken fillings, abscesses and loose crowns.

  • Diarrhoea

    When you pass watery or runny faeces (poo) instead of solid waste.

  • Dizziness

    A feeling of light-headedness and the sensation of spinning, which can affect your balance.

  • Dry cough

    An irritating tickle or itchiness in your throat causing you to cough, can be caused by dust or smoke.

  • Electric shock

    Electric shock occurs when your body comes into contact with electrical energy.

  • Fever

    When your body is above normal temperature. Fever helps the body fight infections by stimulating natural defence mechanisms.

  • Flatulence

    More commonly known as 'passing wind' or 'farting', flatulence is the expelling of gas from the digestive system through the anus

  • Food - going down the wrong way

    When food gets into your windpipe, instead of going down to your oesophagus, it usually causes coughing and spluttering.

  • Gallstones

    Gallstones are small stones, usually made of cholesterol, that form in the gallbladder (a small, pouch-like organ situated underneath the liver).

  • Groin pain

    Pain or discomfort (mild or severe) in the area where the abdomen (stomach area) ends and the legs begin.

  • Hay fever

    An allergic reaction to pollen and spores that can affect your nose, sinuses, throat and eyes. Common symptoms include sneezing, runny nose and itchy eyes.

  • Headache

    Pain or discomfort in the head or neck, ranging from mild to severe. Headaches are an extremely common symptom.

  • Heart

    Pain or discomfort in the heart can feel like a crushing sensation or a heaviness or tightness in the chest, or a dull ache that may spread to the arms, neck, jaw, back or stomach.

  • Heat rash

    Heat rash (also known as prickly heat) is an itchy, red rash that often causes a stinging or prickling sensation on the skin.

  • Indigestion

    Pain or discomfort in the abdomen, a feeling of fullness, burning or belching that is usually related to eating.

  • Insect bites

    Insect bites are puncture wounds that are caused by insects. Insect bites can cause symptoms such as inflammation (redness and swelling), blisters, and irritation.

  • Jaw pain

    Pain in the jaw can range from a mild ache to severe stabbing pain. It can affect the upper and lower jaw, and it can have a number of causes, from dental pain to neuralgia.

  • Legs

    Symptoms such as aches and pains, rashes or discomfort affecting your legs, joints or feet.

  • Light sensitivity

    Light sensitivity can be a symptom of a number conditions such as migraine, or a side effect of some medicines.

  • Lumps - breast

    Advice for if you notice a lump or lumps in your breast, or you notice any changes affecting the look, feel or texture of your breasts or nipples - men and women.

  • Migraine

    A severe headache, usually felt as a throbbing pain at the front or on one side of the head, sometimes people also experience other symptoms, such as nausea and sensitivity to light.

  • Mouth

    Pain and discomfort in the mouth and teeth can range from mouth sores and ulcers to tooth problems such as cavities.

  • Neck - stiff

    Advice on pain, discomfort and stiffness in the neck, upper back and shoulders.

  • Numbness - back

    Numbness refers to a lack of sensation or feeling in any part of the body. This self help guide offers advice for if you experience numbness or tingling in your back.

  • Penis discharge

    Fluid such as liquid, blood or pus (not urine or semen) coming from the tip of the penis.

  • Phlegm - green

    A thick mucus coming from the lungs during or after an infection such as a cough or cold.

  • Pregnancy

    Self help topics related to pregnancy, such as a missed period or female vaginal problems.

  • Repetitive strain injury

    Pain caused to muscles, nerves and tendons by repetitive movement and overuse, commonly affecting the forearm, elbow, wrist, hands, neck and shoulders.

  • Runny nose

    A runny nose is usually a symptom of a cold or an allergy, such as hay fever.

  • Scalds

    Scalds are caused by hot or boiling liquid or steam. When treating a scald, it is important to cool the area as quickly as possible by placing under cool water for 15 minutes.

  • Sinus problems

    Common symptoms that can affect your sinuses include: a blocked or runny nose, pain and tenderness in the face, and a high temperature.

  • Sneezing

    Sneezing is an involuntary expulsion of air and bacteria from the nose and mouth, commonly a symptoms of a cold, or an allergy such as hay fever.

  • Spots

    Spots and rashes can appear on any part of the body, including the genitals.

  • Stomach

    Advice for if you are experiencing any type of pain in the abdomen (stomach area). Pain in this area can be acute and come on suddenly, or come on gradually. It can have a range of causes.

  • Suicidal feelings

  • Sweating

    Sweating, when accompanied by a fever or other aches and pains, can be a symptom of flu.

  • Tennis elbow

    Tennis elbow is a painful condition that occurs as a result of overuse of the muscles and tendons of the forearm and around the elbow joint.

  • Tingling

    Advice for if you have tingling, pins and needles or numbness in your arms or hands.

  • Toddler

    You require information on symptoms affecting a toddler (a child between one and three years old).

  • Toothache

    Toothache (pain in the teeth, gums and jaw) can start suddenly and the pain can vary from mild discomfort to very severe.

  • Urinary problems

    Symptoms of urinary problems can include: pain or a burning sensation during urination (going to wee), a frequent need to urinate, and lower abdominal pain.

  • Vaginal discharge

    Some vaginal discharge is normal. Advice for if you have discharge coming from your vagina which varies in colour, texture or smell from what is normal for you.

  • Vision problems

    Vision problems include pain behind one eye, sudden changes to your vision (eyesight), or patterns in front of your eyes.

  • Watery bowel motions

    When your faeces (poo) is more watery or liquid than usual, it is known as diarrhoea. This is often a result of a stomach upset or infection.

  • Whiplash

    Whiplash occurs when there is a sudden jerk or jolt to the head that causes it to move violently away from the body, for example during a road traffic accident.

  • Wounds

    Advice for cuts, tears or breaks in the skin. It may be neccesary to apply pressure to a wound to stop it from bleeding.

  • Abscesses, dental

    Pain or discomfort from a dental abscess. An abscess is an area of pus caused by an infection in your teeth or gums.

  • Allergic reaction

    When your body reacts badly to an allergen, such as an insect bite or pollen, causing symptoms like an itchy rash, watery eyes or sneezing.

  • Anxiety

    Anxiety is when you have a feeling of fear, unease and being in danger. You may also feel worried, panicky or nervous.

  • Arm

    Symptoms such as aches and pains, rashes or discomfort affecting your arms, joints or hands.

  • Babies

    You require information on symptoms affecting a baby (a child under 12 months old).

  • Bad breath

    Bad breath (halitosis) is a common problem usually caused by bacteria in the mouth.

  • Blocked ears

    Symptoms including a blocked sensation, reduced hearing, a ringing sound (tinnitus) and pain in the ear.

  • Blood in bowel motions

    Traces of blood appearing on or in your stools (poo) can sometimes be a symptom of piles (haemorrhoids).

  • Blood in vomit

    Advice for if you notice traces of blood in the liquid you produce when you vomit (be sick).

  • Blue tinged lips

    Advice for if you notice a blue tinge to your lips, or the lips of someone you are looking after.

  • Bowel motions - loss of control

    When you get sudden urges to go to the toilet (pass bowel movements) that you cannot control, or when you go to the toilet without being aware that you have done so.

  • Breathing difficulty

    Shortness of breath, wheezing, or a tight chest may be caused by a condition such as asthma, a chest infection or an allergic reaction.

  • Catarrh

    The build-up of mucus (phlegm) in one of the airways, or cavities of the body, such as the nose, throat, ears and chest.

  • Choking

    When breathing is prevented because oxygen cannot reach the lungs because something is blocking the airway.

  • Colic

    Advice for if your baby is crying or screaming excessively, even after other causes of crying,(such as hunger, or wind) have been ruled out.

  • Convulsions

    Convulsions are when the body is shaking uncontrollably (sometimes referred to as 'fits'), can be as a result of a seizure or electric shock.

  • Crying baby

    Excessive crying or screaming can affect all babies from time to time. However, it can sometimes be a sign that your baby is feeling unwell.

  • Dehydration

    A lack of fluids in the body can cause dehydration. Symptoms include excessive thirst, headache, lack of urine (wee), or urine that is dark coloured. Dehydration can follow diarrhoea or sickness (vomiting).

  • Depression

    When feelings of being low or down are persistent or so strong that they prevent you from doing the things you would normally do.

  • Dislocated joint

    When the ball of a bone such as the humerus (arm bone) comes out of its socket. Dislocated bones need to be put back in place by a doctor.

  • Drowsiness

    When you feel unusually sleepy during the day. Drowsiness can be a side-effect of taking some types of medicine.

  • Ear problems

    Earache, ear pain or discomfort, a discharge of wax or mucus from the ear, reduced hearing, or a ringing or buzzing sound in the ear (tinnitus).

  • Eyes watering

    Watering or sore eyes can be caused by irritation from dust or smoke, or from an allergy.

  • Fits

    Sometimes called seizures, fits are caused by uncontrolled electrical activity in the brain, and can lead to loss of consciousness.

  • Flu

    Seasonal flu (influenza) is caused by a flu virus which infects your lungs and airways, causing a high temperature, general aches and pains, and feeling of being unwell.

  • Food poisoning

    An illness caused by consuming food or drink that has been in some way contaminated. Common symptoms are nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.

  • Gastroenteritis

    An infection of the stomach and bowel, often caused by food poisoning. The most common symptoms are diarrhoea and vomiting.

  • Halitosis

    Bad breath (halitosis) is a common problem usually caused by bacteria in the mouth.

  • Head

    Information on injuries or conditions affecting your head.

  • Hearing loss

    Your hearing is reduced out of one or both ears, for example as a result of a blow to the head, an injury to the ear, or a cold.

  • Heartburn

    Heartburn is a burning sensation that rises from your stomach, or lower chest, up towards your neck, usually after a large meal, or at night.

  • Incontinence

    When you get sudden urges to go to the toilet (pass bowel movements or pass urine) that you cannot control, or when you go to the toilet without being aware that you have done so.

  • Injuries

    Any trauma to the head or body, for example as a result of an accident such as a trip or fall.

  • Itchy rashes

    Itchy rashes on the skin can be caused by an allergy to something such as a chemical or a plant (nettle rash), rashes can also occur during pregnancy.

  • Joint pain

    Information about aches, pains and stiffness in your joints. Joint problems can have a number of different causes, ranging from injury to conditions such as arthritis.

  • Ligament problems

    Ligaments are bands of tissue that connect bones and muscles, they can be damaged resulting in pain and loss of movement.

  • Low mood

    Ongoing feelings of being fed up, down, or sad.

  • Lumps - groin

    Lumps or painful areas in your groin area (the area between the end of your abdomen and the top of your leg) - male and female.

  • Morning sickness

    Nausea (feeling sick), and vomiting (being sick) in pregnancy is commonly called morning sickness, but can occur at any time during the day.

  • Muscle strain - back

    Advice for muscle aches, pains and strains in your back.

  • Nipple discharge

    Advice about any discharge, liquid or blood (not breast milk) coming from your nipple, or any other changes you may notice to your nipples - women and men.

  • Passive smoking

    A cough can be a result of passive smoking (breathing smoke from other people's cigarettes).

  • Periods

    If you have questions or concerns about your periods (when blood leaves the body through the vagina as part of your menstrual cycle).

  • Poisoning

    Some substances (including medicines, household chemicals, and some plants and berries) can be toxic if they are swallowed, inhaled or otherwise enter the body.

  • Rashes

    Rashes are raised, red marks that can affect any part of your body, they can sometimes be sore, hot or very itchy.

  • Rheumatism

    A general term used to describe the aches and pains felt in your bones and joints.

  • Scabies

    The main symptom of scabies is intense itching to the skin, it can usually be treated effectively.

  • Sexual health

    Information about a wide range of sexual health issues, including your genitals, STIs, urinary tract infections and sexual performance.

  • Smoking

    Smoke from cigarettes (and passive smoking) can irritate the linings of the lungs causing a persistent cough.

  • Sore throat

    Symptoms include a painful, tender feeling at the back of your throat, swollen tonsils, enlarged and tender glands in your neck, and discomfort when swallowing.

  • Sprains

    Sprains and strains are a common injury affecting muscles and ligaments. Symptoms include: pain, swelling and inflammation, and loss of movement in the affected body part.

  • Stress

    Everyone reacts differently to stress (when pressure is placed on you). Sometimes stress can cause symptoms such as anger, depression, anxiety and difficulty sleeping.

  • Swallowing difficulty

    Symptoms of a sore throat or throat infection can include pain and discomfort when swallowing.

  • Temperature - high

    Fever helps the body fight infections by stimulating natural defence mechanisms. A normal temperature is between 36-36.8C (96.8-98.24F), but in children, any temperature of 38C (100.4F) or above is considered high.

  • Testicles

    Advice or help with pain or problems in the testicles (the two oval-shaped male organs situated below the penis that produce sperm and sex hormones).

  • Tiredness

    Feeling exhausted and needing to lie down in the middle of the day can be a symptom of flu.

  • Tonsils

    Tonsils are the areas on either side of the inside of your throat which help the body to fight infection. Your tonsils can become sore and swollen as a result of a throat infection.

  • Unconsciousness

    Loss of consciousness, or being "knocked out"

  • Vagina

    Reliable advice on any female vaginal problem, from periods, to discharge, contraception, pregnancy, the menopause or sexually transmitted infections.

  • Viral illnesses

    Viruses are the cause of many common illnesses such as colds, coughs, sore throats and stomach upsets like diarrhoea and vomiting.

  • Vomiting

    Vomiting (being sick) can be accompanied by nausea, stomach cramps and headaches. It can have a number of causes such as food poisoning or an infection.

  • Wheezing

    Wheezing is the whistling sound made during breathing when the airways are blocked or compressed.

  • Whooping cough (pertussis)

    Symptoms of whooping cough include a hacking cough followed by a sharp intake of breath that sounds like a 'whoop'.
