Minack Theatre summer season

Britain's most original theatre

The Minack Theatre has to be Britain's most beautiful and original theatre. Constructed on a rocky granite outcrop jutting into the sea in Porthcurno Bay, Cornwall, the open-air theatre seems as if it's a natural part of the stone that was always there.

Minack Theatre was planned, built and financed by Rowena Cade, who lived at Minack House overlooking the site where the theatre now stands. Rowena opened the theatre in 1932, and continued to make improvements to it throughout her life.

The Minack celebrated its 75th birthday in 2007 marking this milestone with a performance of ‘The Tempest’ – the first ever play performed there back in 1932. The theatre is used from May to September for a full summer season of 18 plays, produced by companies from all over the UK and visiting companies from the USA. Rowena Cade was a great admirer of Shakespeare and at least one of his plays is performed every year.

This summer will see both Romeo and Juliet and Love’s Labour’s Lost performed in this magical setting. The backdrop of the sea, stars and natural sounds and smells of the Cornish coast make watching a play at the Minack an unforgettable experience, and one you’ll want to repeat on every trip to Britain. And the theatre is just 10 minutes from Lands End – Britain’s the most south-westerly tip of Britain’s mainland and a great photo opportunity.
