OVERNIGHT FULL MOTORWAY & LINK ROAD CLOSURES

Work will continue overnight next week to install new overhead gantries, signs and signals as part of the expansion of Active Traffic Management on the M42 and M6.
These are some of a number of closures which will occur throughout the summer.

Tuesday 14 July

The overnight total closure of the M42 Southbound J8 link road to the M6 J4A Northbound
The overnight total closure of the M42 Northbound carriageway beneath J9

Wednesday 15 July

The overnight total closure of the M42 Southbound J8 link road to the M6 J4A Northbound
The overnight total closure of the M6 Southbound J4A link road to the M42 J8 Northbound and Southbound

Fully signed diversion routes will be in operation from J8 Southbound of the M42, J4A Southbound of the M6 and J9 Northbound of the M42.

For traffic using the M42 Southbound heading for the North and West via the M6 North: the diversion route from J8 is south on the M42 to J6 where traffic will exit, rejoining the M42 Northbound carriageway. Traffic will then exit the M42 at J7 to join the M6 Northbound. This will add approximately 5 miles and 10 minutes to the average journey.

For traffic using the M6 Southbound, heading for the South and South West via the M42 South: the diversion route from the M6 J4A is to continue southbound on the M6 to J4 where traffic will exit and turn south on the A446 to the A452/A45 junction turning west on to the A45 to rejoin the M42 at J6. This will add approximately 2 miles and 5 minutes to the average journey.

For traffic using the M6 Southbound heading for the North via the M42 North: the diversion route from the M6 J4A is to continue south on the M6 southbound to J4 where traffic will exit and turn north on the A446 to rejoin the M42 at J9. This will add approximately 2 miles and 10 minutes to the average journey.

For traffic using the M42 Northbound heading for the North via the M42 North: the diversion route from M42 J9 is to leave the M42 at J9 via the northbound exit slip road and then re-join the M42 northbound via the J9 entry slip road. This will add approximately 5 minutes to the average journey.

The diversion routes will be clearly signed using a combination of the Highways Agency's variable message signs and temporary yellow signs in advance and on the nights of the closures.

Notes to Editors

1. The Highways Agency is an executive agency of the Department for Transport. We manage, maintain and improve England’s motorways and major A roads on behalf of the Secretary of State.

2. The diversion routes have been chosen based on a number of criteria including; the diversion routes should use HA roads, dual carriageways and avoid residential areas as much as is practicable. Extensive use of the variable message signs across the country will advise road users, in advance, of the closures and the diversion routes.

3. The works will be carried out and supervised by Carillion Infrastructure Management on behalf of the Highways Agency. For more information visit www.highways.gov.uk/atm

4. Real -time traffic information for England’s motorways and major A roads is now available:

Safe driving at roadworks

The Highways Agency is working with the industry and road users to reduce the risks of working on the roads. For the safety of roadworkers and all road users, when you are approaching roadworks:

* Keep within the speed limit – it is there for your safety.
* Get into the correct lane in good time – don’t keep switching.
* Concentrate on the road ahead, not the roadworks.
* Be alert for works’ traffic leaving or entering roadworks.
* Keep a safe distance – there could be queues in front.
* Observe all signs – they are there to help you.
