Handbook for the inspection of further education and skills from September 2009
This document was originally published in July 2009 and revised in January 2010. Minor amendments have been made to clarify the safeguarding grade characteristics. Please see pages 61-65.
This handbook provides guidance on inspection for inspectors and will be of use to colleges and providers of further education; work-based learning; adult and community learning; provision funded by the Department for Work and Pensions; and nextstep provision. There is a separate handbook for inspecting judicial services.
The handbook replaces all previous separate guidance for colleges and wider remit inspections, but not judicial services.
The handbook covers inspections from September 2009. It includes reference to the new common inspection framework 2009 with new guidance on, for example, the inspection of safeguarding and equality and diversity.
The Common inspection framework for further education and skills 2009 is a summary of the key features of the full common inspection framework.
Additional guidance on inspecting employer provision has been written for employers who manage and run their own government-funded contracts and for inspectors to use during inspection of those employers.

Handbook for the Inspection of Initial Teacher Training for inspections from September 2005
The handbook was republished in September 2007 with a new design and the new logo. The text has been amended in the light of the recently revised standards and requirements for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
This handbook for the inspection of initial teacher training explains how the framework will be applied in all inspections of initial teacher training that lead to QTS in the period September 2005 to July 2008. This framework has since been replaced by the 2008 single framework which covers all phases of ITE provision.

This Handbook for the Inspection of Initial Teacher Training (the Handbook) explains how the Framework will be applied in all initial teacher training (ITT) inspections.It also shows how inspections relate to the Professional Standards for Qualified Teacher Status (the Standards )and the Requirements for Initial Teacher Training (the Requirements ), contained in Qualifying to Teach, DfES/TTA, 2002, and other relevant legislation,such as the Race Relations (Amendment) Act (2000). Headlamp - Training for newly appointed headteachers
In 2002, Ofsted published a report on two of the three national training programmes for headteachers; the National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) and the Leadership Programme for Serving Headteachers (LPSH). The report also included inspection findings on local education authority (LA) induction arrangements for newly appointed headteachers, including some elements which were funded by the third national programme; the Leadership and Management Programme for New Headteachers (Headlamp). This second report, which complements the earlier one, focuses specifically on the quality and effectiveness of Headlamp provision.

- all applicants for registration to provide or manage social care services for children and/or young people.
