16 December - The colour of COP15
Over the past two weeks, literally thousands have descended on the Bella Centre, home of the highly anticipated UN Climate Change Negotiations - or COP15. Some 45,000 people have applied to attend the conference - three times the Bella Centre capacity.
Total numbers inside the centre number are made up of parties (countries under the UN Framework) from 192 countries, literally thousands of press and media, and a heavy NGOs and civil society presence. Towards the end of last week, the UN was accrediting around 2000 extra people per day.
With high anticipation and the air of expectation, the mood at the Bella Centre has sharpened - as well become physically more crowded - as Ministers and VIPs have begaun to arrive. Demonstrators and civil society are demonstrating inside the Bella Centre, whilst outside hundreds are today marching through central Copenhagen down to the Bella Centre and inside the Bella Centre, the pressure is rising with NGOs demonstrating within the centre. This follows a weekend of over 100,000 demonstrating in Copenhagen and around the world, and a year of immense pressure building towards this crucial Copenhagen week of tackling climate change.
Copenhagen is amongst the biggest summits ever held, and certainly the biggest outside the UN's home in New York.
With the eyes of the world watching, expectations are high. And as Connie Hedegaard, Chair of the Summit said yesterday at the Ministerial Opening segement: 'YOU must compromise, YOU must commit. YOU must deliver – NOW.'
