Integrating spatial and land-use planning with transport is key to promoting sustainable patterns of development and economic growth. By influencing the location of new development efficient land-use can reduce the need to travel, particularly by car, and minimise its impact on the environment.
DaSTS outlines our five goals for transport, focusing on the challenge of delivering strong economic growth while at the same time reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It outlines the key components of our national infrastructure. It discusses the difficulties of planning over the long term in the context of uncertain future demand and describes the substantial investments we are making to tackle congestion and crowding on our transport networks.
This is an update on the progress made on the TaSTS process since publication in October last year including: the views of over 250 organisations throughout the country on the ‘goals’ and ‘challenges’ for developing transport solutions; consulting on how we can improve our appraisal mechanism, the New Approach to Appraisal (NATA); and organising an online ‘citizens panel’ of over 600 members of the public.
The Eddington Transport Study is a joint HM Treasury and Department for Transport project examining the long-term links between transport and the UK’s economic productivity, growth and stability, within the context of the Government’s broader commitment to sustainable development and the environment.
