Remedies Directive - Getting ready for the new rules

The UK rules will change substantially for all new public procurements starting on or after 20 December 2009, with several new remedies available for certain serious breaches of the procurement rules. OGC will shortly be publishing detailed guidance for procurers, but in the meantime you can read more about the implementation of the EU Remedies Directive via OGC's most recent Public Procurement Notice (PDF).

Small businesses to compete in Energy Efficient Whitehall competition

Small businesses are invited to compete for £2.75m worth of new Government contracts to bring innovative energy efficiency technology to Whitehall buildings. Government leadership in cutting carbon is crucial, demonstrating to other sectors that better energy efficiency can also save money.  Find out more here.

Suppliers must work harder to integrate carbon reduction strategies, according to CDP report

A report by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) reveals the need for better integration of carbon reduction strategies within suppliers" organisational policies. Public Procurement Report for the UK Government is the result of an unprecedented collaboration on climate change undertaken by 14 Departments and executive agencies to encourage their suppliers to disclose their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and climate change-related risk.

Acquiring property in the public sector - new energy performance targets announced

Government has made a commitment to procure only buildings in the top quartile of energy performance and to report on progress against this commitment each year in the State of the Estate Report. Departments and their arms length bodies should ensure that all staff with responsibility for acquiring property are aware of this change, and OGC is updating the Top Quartile guidance on its website to include the new level.

Grey fleet conference helps public sector organisations set up new initiatives

Over 100 delegates attended the national grey fleet conference on 25 November. They heard from public sector organisations how to proactively tackle grey fleet and were taken through the 5-step process to set up a grey fleet initiative, which you can access here.

The GPS Career Management Programme will enable procurement professionals in central Government to take more control of their own career development with the right support and guidance. Guardian Public Service Awards the biggest yet

OGC sponsored the Partnership Working Category of The Guardian"s biggest ever Public Service Awards as part of our initiative to raise awareness of collaborative procurement across the public sector. Winners were Southwark Council and Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, for their 'HMG Tell Us Once' programme, designed to make sure people only have to tell the Government about a change in their circumstances (a birth, separation or death) once. We hope partner organizations will have many more inspiring initiatives - and hopefully some great examples of collaborative procurement - to put forward for next year"s awards!

OGC to lead SRO community after Cabinet Secretary meeting

Sir Gus O"Donnell and Senior Responsible Owners met in November to discuss how they could learn from each other and be effectively supported. OGC was identified as being the most appropriate lead for this community.  Find out more here.

Government Procurement Service (GPS) Reaches Membership Milestone!
