Region’s Businesses Gain Real Opportunities at Going Global

Yorkshire Forward’s recent Going Global meet the buyer event in Harrogate provided a much needed boost to regional businesses, with over 70% of businesses confident of winning new business as a direct result of attending.

Nearly 1,000 individual meetings took place during the one day event, which was created by Yorkshire Forward to provide tangible opportunities for Yorkshire businesses to deal direct with world-leading buyers ranging from Siemens Wind Power, Ford, Wal-Mart to the Juffali Chemical Company.

Yorkshire Forward, alongside UK Trade and Investment, organised the event to give regional businesses the opportunity to meet with buyers who were actively looking for suppliers, and to test different routes to market, all in one location.

In a resounding vote of confidence for the Meet the Buyer event, 100% of the international buyers said they would attend the event again based on the quality of our businesses.

As Steve Proctor, Director of Facilities, Materials & Services Purchasing at Ford of Europe commented: “This event was well organised and was a highly efficient way to meet so many new organisations and potential suppliers in a concentrated time-span, companies that I might not otherwise have got to meet and companies that otherwise might not have thought of bringing their ideas to Ford's attention, are now in mind as a potential customer".

This view was echoed by other buyers such as Michelle Miranda Thewissen, Brand Manager at Wal-Mart in México and Mukesh Daftary, President of Biomed Health Tech Pvt in India who said: “I feel I have made so many contacts for future business that I will need to visit Yorkshire again very soon.”

Theresa Lindsay, Assistant Director of Business at Yorkshire Forward explained the thinking behind the event. “As the UK emerges from recession we wanted to step up our efforts to help our region’s businesses to adapt faster and see exporting as a way to maintain and grow their business.

“Many businesses are understandably reluctant to spend time and money assessing new markets, Going Global enabled us to remove these barriers and the risk, by bringing buyers and suppliers together, under one roof, in one day, to do business.”

Ian Pog, Managing Director of Andel Ltd in Huddersfield said: “It is inconceivable that we could have committed to the expense of a sales mission to Asia or South America in these times so an initiative such as Going Global has made a real difference to Andel.  From being rather skeptical as to how Yorkshire Forward could bring serious buyers from around the world to our doorstep I am really pleased to report that we made four good, new contacts and I really expect to be doing business with two of them quite soon.”

“Last week I flew to events in Chicago and New Orleans looking for new business – this week I made much more fruitful business contacts in Harrogate – just three miles from my factory – well done Yorkshire Forward!” added Martin Doxey, Managing Director of Claro Precision Engineering Ltd.
