Curriculum Innovation in schools

This report focuses on curriculum innovation in schools and the factors that contribute to its success. The small scale survey that formed the basis of the report found that the innovations that most of the schools visited had made had improved pupils’ achievement and personal development. Successful change relied on strong leadership at all levels, a shared understanding of the reasons and need for innovation, and committed staff who had been prepared and trained carefully to implement change.

How colleges improve

The purpose of this review document is to stimulate discussion in the further education sector about how improvement might best be accelerated and barriers to change overcome. The first part illustrates the characteristics of those colleges that improved their performance between first and second cycle Ofsted inspections. This is followed by a review of the factors impeding change in those colleges judged by Ofsted to be satisfactory but not improving in second cycle inspections.

Responses to the consultation on the integration of welfare and education inspections

In September 2008 Ofsted intends to introduce, where inspection cycles allow, single inspections that cover both education and welfare provision in schools with boarding provision or children’s homes that offer education. This integrated approach will result in a single inspection report.

This is the summary of the responses to the consultation on this proposal.

The impact of programme-led apprenticeships

This survey report evaluates programme-led apprenticeships and their impact on improving participation and achievement. Programme-led apprenticeships provide an important alternative to the more traditional employer-led apprenticeship route for young people who have found it difficult to gain employment or for those who require an initial period of planned training before taking up employment. This report looks at the different methods of delivering programme-led apprenticeships and evaluates their success.
