Managing Department for Work and Pensions contracts
This small-scale review outlines the practice of some successful Department for Work and Pensions prime contractors in managing their subcontractors. Inspectors visited 10 prime contractors where leadership and management had been judged good at the last inspection and performance was improving. The review identifies the key characteristics of successful practice and includes guidance questions that providers might use as a prompt for evaluation and to improve the quality of their work.

Making more of music - improving the quality of music teaching (primary)
Two Making more of music booklets – for primary and secondary schools – are intended as discussion documents for staff who are involved in teaching music in schools. They highlight the aspects of effective teaching and present them in a chart which describes the satisfactory, good and outstanding features seen in Ofsted’s music inspections.
The booklets also feature best practice examples from the 2008/09 academic year and from the Ofsted music report, Making more of music, which was published in February and led to development of these resources.
The booklets are a development of the Making more of music report from February 2009.

Making more of music: an evaluation of music in schools 2005-08
This report is based principally on evidence from inspections in a range of maintained schools. Part A focuses on inspection findings. They show that there is some outstanding provision and pupils enjoy music, although they do not always make as much musical progress as they could. Part B considers the essential components of effective teaching in music.
