Support staff training and development

There is a lot to consider when developing or providing training and qualifications for school support staff.

The TDA is the sector body for the school workforce in England. We are responsible for ensuring the training and development opportunities available to schools and their staff are fit for purpose, meet their needs and recognise their skills.

The school workforce development board (SWDB)
The SWDB is the sector-wide body concerned with training and developing the wider school workforce. It has a three-year strategy for training and developing school support staff. 

Higher level teaching assistant (HLTA) programme
An overview of the HLTA programme for local authorities, providers of preparation and assessment and training providers. Includes advice and guidance documentation.

Workforce research and evaluation
The collection and analysis of evidence and intelligence helps to inform the planning and delivery of school workforce training and development.

Career development framework for school support staff
The career development framework supports local authorities and schools by identifying appropriate training and qualifications for school support staff.  

Support work in schools qualifications
Funded by the TDA the support work in schools qualifications are flexible and tailored to be relevant to a range of specific job roles and provide on-the-job training and assessment leading to a nationally recognised qualification.

The Children’s Workforce Development Council (CWDC), in partnership with the TDA, are setting out the priorities for the early years workforce.
