Local Government Improvement & Efficiency

We are involved in a range of initiatives that aim to improve local government in the South East. We work closely with local authorities and their partners to ensure support is available when needed. We also work closely with the Audit Commission and other inspectorates, and with support bodies, to identify both where support is needed and where there is good practice from which others can learn.

For local authorities to deliver effective services to the public it is important that they are well run and can react to changing demands. Government Offices provide support for them to do this. More information on the national picture

The South East RIEP (Improvement and Efficiency South East) is a partnership dedicated to driving a step change in the performance of local government in the region by closing the gap between the highest performing authorities and others in the region.

Delivering improvements in the face of considerable environmental, economic and social challenges, rising public expectations and slowed growth in public spending will require new levels of efficiency, innovation and performance. Built into the South East approach is support for political and managerial leaders and their staff in developing changed structures, new skills and more effective ways of working.
