Farming and Food

The Yorkshire and Humber region is the fifth largest of the nine English regions and the land area is classified as 87% rural. This is a diverse region with all major farming types represented.

The farming and food industry has three key challenges: to compete successfully with the world’s best; care for the environment; and build public confidence in what it produces. The industry needs to achieve these aims to be sustainable, and for everyone else to see real improvements in the quality of life. More information on the national picture

As part of Defra's Strategy for Sustainable Farming and Food each region prepared a delivery plan to set out how the regional strategy was to be implemented. Working with regional stakeholders and partners Government Office for Yorkshire and The Humber (GOYH) examined how we could generate sustainable livelihoods for both farmers and the wider rural community in our region.

Following the success of the first plan Framework for Change and in response to the Future of Farming report, the updated Yorkshire and Humber Delivery Plan was published in May 2009 to help develop a successful Strategy for Sustainable Food and Farming for Yorkshire and The Humber. It will work towards integrated, sustainable development in the Farming and Food industry which will leave the Region's countryside (and the planet) in a better, healthier state to pass onto the next generation. Priorities from the business plan are;

• Animal Health and Welfare
• Food Security
• Climate Change
• Education
• Communication
• The Uplands
• Public Procurement
• Food Tourism

The Executive Committee brings together knowledge & expertise from the following organisations:
