Children and Young People

Children and young people are the most important resource a society has. We have a Minister for Children, Young People and Families in the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF).

'Every Child Matters - Change for Children' set out a national framework of change, to be led by local authorities and their partners, to improve life for children and young people. Government Offices (GOs) play a key role in delivering and developing the policies which will achieve this. More information on the national picture

Government Office for the East Midlands (GOEM) supports the implementation of DCSF policies on education; including early year’s education, childcare and social care of children and young people through our regional strategic partners. These partners include:

  • Children’s Centres
  • Connexions Partnerships
  • Governors
  • Learning and Skills Council
  • JobCentre Plus
  • Local Authorities
  • Local Children’s Safeguarding Boards (LSCBs)
  • Primary Care Trusts
  • Schools and Extended Services
  • Strategic Health Authority
  • Voluntary and Community Sector organisations
  • Youth Offending Teams

Our job is to act as the link between strategic policy leadership in Whitehall and local partners who work with and deliver services for children and young people. Our aim is to support the development of better local services. We do this through managing negotiations between local bodies and national government departments.
