Budding entrepreneurs in Leeds flock to the Enterprise Shows

30/03/2010

The Enterprise Shows celebrated their 10th anniversary last weekend (March 27 – 28th) with record breaking attendances at the Leeds shows. The free events, which are run by Business Link Yorkshire and funded by Yorkshire Forward, attracted over 1,400 people over the two days, keen to find out more about how to get started or how to improve their own business.

Visitors to the shows heard from Yorkshire entrepreneur Simon Darker who runs Leeds based Think Pacific, a responsible travel business, and motivational speaker Jonathan Yates (who was praised for his business instinct by Peter Jones from Dragon’s Den).

An ambassador for Enterprise UK, Jonathan is also an author and inventor; having come up with the idea for a product that when added to refilled water bottles rehydrates with a vitamin boost. WAHOO became an award-winning healthy alternative to fizzy, sugary soft drinks on the go, sold through UK retailers and the Military. Speaking to a packed seminar, Jonathan encouraged would-be entrepreneurs to make use of all the free advice available. “Be bold – because boldness has power and magic in it - but also recognise where you do not have skills and be prepared to ask questions,” he said.

Bradford entrepreneur Raysal Hussein was at the show to find out how to set up a website for his business, Gadgets’ Den, which will sell games consoles to retailers and direct to customers. “I’m able to see an adviser, a web specialist and potential funding sources – all in the same place. I feel really prepared now for my launch next month”.

Andy Kemp, marketing manager at Business Link Yorkshire, said “What’s been so impressive this year is how many people have come with well structured ideas which are ready to go. The ambition is there, together with a strong grasp of the commercial realities. It’s been great to be able to help people fine tune their business ideas so they have all the information they need to get started and succeed”.

Alex McWhirter, assistant director for business at Yorkshire Forward, who first launched the Enterprise Shows, said “The fact that these shows have attracted potential entrepreneurs in such large numbers shows they are every bit as relevant today as when we first launched them ten years ago. And it’s the businesses like these that will make a substantial contribution to the future regional economy. That’s why it’s been so brilliant to feel the buzz that has been around all weekend and genuinely hear people talking about ‘living their dream’.

Designed to inspire, inform and motivate,  the Enterprise Shows, funded by Yorkshire Forward and delivered by Business Link Yorkshire, will be held at City Hall in Hull on April 10 -11th, at Meadowhall in Sheffield on 24 – 25th April and at York racecourse on 8 – 9th May.

Entry to all events is free. For further information on the Enterprise Shows call 0800 032 26 26 or visit theenterpriseshows.com
