77-year-old volunteer urges more to have fun and “Muck in”

Published: Mon, 10 Aug 2009 18:35:13

Mavis Murphy is an extraordinary volunteer. As she heads towards her 80s, this remarkable woman, who has been volunteering for almost 30 years, is still actively involved in supporting the RSPB and their nature reserve at Fairburn Ings near Castleford.

Now Mavis is urging others to join in the Muck In4Life campaign, which is run by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). The campaign aims to encourage individuals and families with children out into fields, woodlands and wetlands to take up a range of green volunteering activities.

The campaign encourages people to use volunteering as a fun way of getting regular exercise and leading a healthier lifestyle. Volunteers can also enter photos of their experience and win high street vouchers, as well as have their pictures displayed at the world famous Kew Gardens.
