Government Offices have a key role in delivering the Government’s vision that everyone should live in a decent home. Housing is the policy responsibility of Communities and Local Government, and the Government Offices work to deliver a number of the Department’s housing targets in the regions. They use their local knowledge both to work with a range of partners to promote and improve understanding of the Government’s housing policy and to influence the development of new housing initiatives.

Our key areas of work focus on:
Decent Homes - ensuring delivery of the Government’s decent social housing target by the national 2010 deadline, with a specific role to support and monitor LA/ALMO progress towards the target. We are also working with partners to increase the number of vulnerable households living in decent housing in the region from 54% to at least 70% by 2010.
Regional Housing Board - we provide strategic and technical support to the Yorkshire and Humber Assembly (YHA) led Regional Housing Board (RHB). We attend RHB meetings as an adviser to ensure that regional housing policy and investment is contributing to Government – as well as regional – targets and priorities. We also work alongside regional partners to ensure alignment between housing, economic, and spatial strategies. The work of the Regional Housing Board, including its Regional Housing Strategy work, can be viewed by using the " Regional Housing Board " link
Fit For Purpose Housing Strategies and Business Plans - we are working with local authorities that have not yet reached the standard to develop plans that are Fit For Purpose. We are also supporting the development of sub regional housing strategies, where appropriate.
Housing Market Renewal – we work alongside the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) and pathfinders in South Yorkshire (Transform) and Hull/East Riding (Gateway) to ensure their successful implementation in the region.
We work alongside regional partners to ensure that strategic investment and delivery of services is meeting the needs and aspirations of all our communities, including the homeless, black and minority ethnic communities, gypsy and travellers, older people, young people.
We work alongside regional partners to address affordability issues across the region, including rural areas.
