Worklessness August 2009

Future Jobs Fund

Since its announcement in the budget and our role as the coordination hub, Future Jobs Fund has been one of our main priorities in the GO. Along with partners and colleagues from DWP and CLG we held 2 workshops to help potential bidders understand the scheme and the assessment process (We’ve included the presentations from these events in this edition) and from the end of June we began the rolling process for assessment of bids.

This culminated in last weeks announcement and a number of ministerial visits:- up to 4,200 jobs will be created in our region following the first round of bids which is great news for Yorkshire and the Humber

These jobs will benefit both young people under 25, and those from some of our more disadvantaged areas, who have been out of work for nearly a year or more.  Getting them into work; work that brings benefits not only to themselves but to the wider community – from bringing empty houses back into use in Kirklees, to working in a Citizens Advice Bureau in Rotherham, or becoming a health trainer in Barnsley.

And this is just the start. So far six bids from our region have been successful – those from partnerships in:
• Kirklees (350 jobs),
• Sheffield City Region (2100 jobs in Sheffield, Rotherham and Doncaster),
• Barnsley (644 jobs),
• the Humber (350 jobs in Hull, North East Lincs, North Lincs, and the East Riding),
as well as from the North Yorkshire Learning Consortium (40 jobs) and VCTrain in South Yorkshire (60 jobs).

We’ll also benefit from some national bids, including jobs with Groundwork working with the National Housing Federation and the HCT Group which includes community transport jobs in Leeds.

More jobs will follow as more bids are put forward and assessed in the coming months
