Environmental Issues

Government Office for Yorkshire and The Humber (GOYH) works with partners from across the region on a range of environmental issues to improve and protect the environment.

Protection of the environment requires activity on many different fronts - from acting to limit global environmental threats, such as mitigating and adapting to climate change, to safeguarding individuals from the effects of poor air quality or toxic chemicals. Such actions also produce benefits for housing (through improved energy efficiency of buildings) and economic growth (through more efficient use of resources, such as re-use, recycling and recovery of waste). More information on the national picture

Current work GOYH are involved in or supporting across the region includes:

  • Delivering the regional climate change action plan
  • Improving local environmental quality through support of the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005
  • Ensuring Local Area Agreements include key environmental objectives
  • Maintaining and enhancing biodiversity
  • Improving air quality and its monitoring
  • Delivery of actions set out in the Regional Forestry Strategy for Yorkshire & The Humber
  • Water– including river water quality, water supply, flooding and other issues relating to the EU Water Framework Directive
  • Supporting the work of the Yorkshire and Humber Regional Environment Forum and the delivery of actions set out in the Regional Environment Enhancement Strategy
