SW Children in Care Board sponsors innovative event for young Care Leavers in half term week

Published: 23/10/09

Devon plays host to a regional event for young people leaving local authority care, being held at Bicton College next week (25-27 October). Devon County Council's Care Leavers Service is hosting the event for young people from across the South West region, to mark National Care Leavers' Week, which runs from 25 to 30 October. There will be a range of activities on offer, including outdoor team building, a night hike, evening entertainment, and off site visits to local places of interest.

The event is being funded by Government Office South West on behalf of the SW Children in Care Board and will allow young people the opportunity to discuss issues of common interest about leaving care and the support they are being given as well as having some fun.

This is a really good way of getting the views of young Care Leavers in the region. We know that outcomes for Care Leavers are improving across the SW with more young people in education or training and suitably housed than the national average but we know there's a lot more to be done.

The Care Leavers Service will be using the event to get the young people's views on their service, as well as discussions on issues such as employment, training, housing and what a regional network for care leavers might look like. These views will also help us to design a regional Children in Care conference planned for January 2010.
