Government Office for the South East assists the delivery of the Department for Transport’s 'Future of Transport' that was published in 2004. This updated the 'Transport Ten Year Plan', which laid the foundations for significant changes to the country's transport infrastructure, with an investment of £180 bn. We also work closely with local authorities to monitor progress and delivery of their Local Transport Plans.

Transport impacts on everyone's lives. Improving the transport system and its operation is a critical element in the Government’s economic, social and environmental agenda. Better access to jobs and services, particularly for those most in need, is a priority shared between local and central government, and a core aspect of Government Office work. We work with local and regional organisations, such as the South East England Regional Assembly and the South East England Development Agency, to promote an efficient and integrated transport system. We also work with partners on cycling, walking, promoting green travel, freight, rail, aviation, ports, rail and bus issues.

Our aim is transport that works for everyone. To that end we work in partnership with others to:

  • tackle congestion
  • improve accessibility
  • reduce casualties
  • respect the environment
  • support the economy

The Local Transport Plan Capital Settlement was announced on 27 November 2007 by Transport Minister, Rosie Winterton. The settlement represents almost £649 m for the South East transport authorities to spend on local transport improvements and maintenance schemes over the next three years (made up of £204m in 2008/09, £215m in 2009/10 and £229m in 2010/11).
